not surprised at all. Merry Melee was a novelty at best. People played it because it was new and shiny, and because they wanted the sleeve. Neither of those 'reasons to play' last very long.

well...
but thats just one trendline..
there is also immortal gauntlet participations and bash/clash numbers..
maybe merry melee is just a sad outlier..
well...
maybe not
Also, on the topic of communication, can we get patch notes early? I don't think there is really any reason to withold them until the start of maintenance.
OUCH. Thats gotta hurt.

Actually, it has. Probably some bug fixing is done at last minute, or for example, doesn't make the cut (for whatever reason) and if you make public the patch notes earlier you can either have something listed that's not fixed or vice versa. (It's a common practice among devs).
Now, for any improvement over the game (a.k.a. merry melee for example), you're right. They could throw a teaser if something's coming. That's why I'm leaned to think that nothing big will happen.......... but I want to believe that I'm wrong

Ya there's definitely valid reason to not post the patch notes until the patch is finalized... but the fact that there wasn't even a BRIEF discussion at ANY point this week(whether it be article, forum post, or otherwise) about these 'merry melee improvements' is just another sign of how little Hex understands the value of communication.
