As an entirely PvE focused player, Frostheart is the first set so far that I haven't been excited for. I've been thinking about it a lot since the launch and have come up with some reasons why:
1. New mechanics fatigue. Frostheart has several new mechanics that require a bunch of new synergy cards that don't play with the cards I already have. I'm not as interested in starting a new Illuminate, Fateweave, Gladiator, Deathcry deck from scratch when my collection is filled with Conscript and Mobilize cards that don't see play. Maybe if it was only one or two new mechanics, but nearly every card is for a new deck type except for mill.
2. PvE card power level. Many PvE cards are overpowered to make up for the difficulty of PvE modes. This makes many regular cards look really weak. Sort of how a card looks good in limited but bad in constructed, a lot of constructed cards look weak for PvE. When a mono-blue deck has 0 mana counterspells with a 2/2 unblockable creature attached, it's hard to find room for the normally balanced cards.
3. Cards that make me go "I need to play with that." There's usually a few of these in each set. Walking Calamity. William Rowan. Mistress of Bones and her trinket that puts all Underworld troops from the graveyard into play had me so psyched for Herofall. For Frostheart, I like Vision of Zeota, but it's a Unique so I only bought 2. I tried out Hogarth and immediately resold him. That's about it. Even the dragons just don't grab me. One is for Illuminate, the other is a 7 drop in black, which is where Mistress resides. Which brings me to...
4. So many cards to choose from. I'm not recommending formats for PvE, but the downside of including everything means there's only so much room for new stuff. Why buy Massacre when I already own Extinction? Why buy Uruunaz the Merciless to resurrect one card when Mistress can rez them all? I'm not sure how to fix this problem, but it seems like it will only get harder to include new cards with each set.
Since this is the first set so far that I haven't been excited to play, hopefully it's an anomaly as the previous sets have been great.
